Sr. Process / Quality Engineer
About the role
As a Senior Quality / Process Engineer, you will be responsible for building a world class quality process. Our multi-disciplinary team aims to rethink shipbuidling from first principles, applying insight from industries like automotive, aerospace, and medical devices.
We will work with cross-functional teams throughout the entire lifecycle of a product (from design through prototype development and into full production). Our goal is to develop high quality and efficient manufacturing equipment and processes that will produce ships of all shapes and sizes, eventually spanning from 100ft - 500ft+ in length.
As an early member of an exciting startup team, you’ll have an opportunity to shape the future of global shipbuilding and re-establish American leadership in maritime.
What You'll Do
- Establish and maintain Control Plans to assure critical features are controlled and monitored through the assembly/production processes as well as establish criteria for Part Inspection Standards based on product specification and process critical requirements
- Accountable for the quality of incoming components, quality controls and assurance in production process, root cause analysis and resolution of problems impacting internal and external customers, continuous improvement and risk mitigation
- Development of manufacturing requirements, quality standards and product quality plans to assure products will meet expectations of our target customers
- Deployment of manufacturing level requirements to subsystems, assemblies & components to assure clear focus on design and customer needs
- Leading development of FMEAs (Design & Process) for development teams to identify and address critical risks
- Participate in design reviews to assure product subsystem quality, manufacturability, reliability, etc.
- Assist development with dimensional analysis, statistical tolerancing and other methods to investigate the effects of part and process variability on system performance
- Support process capability analyses to investigate the ability of suppliers and production processes to meet defined specifications and quality standards
- Design effective experiments through DOE or other methods to support design and process teams in investigation of various alternatives to resolve quality issues
- Manage and facilitate the root cause & corrective actions system through tracking and validation of issues and support in root cause analysis through facilitating brainstorming, use of lean methodologies, hypothesis testing, design of experiments, DMAIC, 8D, etc.
- Manage the documentation process to ensure compliance with relevant regulatory / certification bodies.
About You
- Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering, or with equivalent experiences
- 7+ years of experience in quality or other disciplines in high volume manufacturing is preferred
- Experience in establishing a controls plan for a new line is highly preferred
- Experience managing a technical team, or other professional leadership experience as well as demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and implement changes
- Proficiency in SQL, R, Minitab (or similar) is a plus
- Experience conducting PFMEAs for production processes as well as experience in ISO-9001, QS-9000, ISO/TS/IATF 16949, APQP, PPAP is a plus
- Strong quantitative and data analysis skills, including process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, and similar
- Experience with broad variety of measurement and inspection techniques as well as familiarity reliability test techniques (accelerated life testing) is a plus
- Experience creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment
- High degree of comfort with ambiguity, with entrepreneurial experience highly desirable.
Our expectations:
- You will be in our Austin, Texas office at minimum 40/hrs week, with 60+ likely. Our mission cannot be accomplished with remote work or traditional office hours.
- You will travel as-needed, whether to tour a shipyard/factory, visit potential suppliers or track down a logistics problem snarling production.
- You will leave your preconceived ideas at the door, building from first principles with a team of smart, motivated engineers.
- You will move fast, moving from modeling & simulation to bench test and back to simulation sometimes multiple times per day, treating every iteration as a critical learning opportunity.
- You will persevere even when the going gets tough - because it will get tough.
Expected Compensation
$79,200 - $145,800k base + .2-.5% equity
How equity works
At Joliet we are building for the long-term. We grant stock options because we believe every employee should own part of the company. Options are granted after you start and vest over five years from your full-time start date (20% after year 1, then 1/60 per month).
Equity in a private company is difficult to value, but potential future outcomes are presented below to give you a feel for our equity compensation program. The following is intended as an example and does not account for exercise price, dilution, or taxes:
.5% equity
At $200MM valuation: $1MM
At $2B valuation: $10MM
